New Botong

NewBotong is a process-oriented work that begins from the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic and looks into the future where everything can coexist. Based on the online and offline workshops conducted for about two months, this game was created to draw up a future scenario where diverse identities and values are appreciated in the earth’s ecological conditions and estimate such a world’s sustainability. Thus, the game appears to be a process of developing a world where the values each player pursues are respected, and playing can continue as long as the earth’s ecological conditions last. In the exhibition is an interactive mobile game, a two-channel video in which audiences encounter situations that require decision-making in the game, and an archive that consists of videos, documents, and a website where one can look at the entire process of the project.

NewBotong is curator Woo Ah-reum, game designer Duo Loopntale, British-based socially engaged artist Hwa Young Jung, and visual artist Jinoon Choi. Sharing interest in joint research and games, they conducted joint research on topics through collaboration between various media, genres, roles – unraveling in various forms of play. NewBotong Project proposes a new normal for the future, starting from the present point (2021) of the climate crisis and pandemic, together with workshop participants recruited through a public open call.
