Joyful Trouble is a public art project exploring how to stay with the troubles of the climate crisis through collective joy. Examining the biodiversity in the hyper-urban Seoul, South Korea, we collaborated with people from many fields to ask, move, dream how to thrive together by playing games.

We use play and games as accessible cultural activity that creates a magic circle to interrogate collective solutions to the climate emergency with a broad range of people. 

The Joyful Trouble team (2 interns from PaTI (Paju Typographic Institute), producer So Yong) spent 9 months researching how to approach the loss of biodiversity from a more than human perspective. Through 4 public events, manifesto writing workshops and a 2 day game festival (including a game jam), we set a direction for possible futures, and invite the public to play in collaboration, solidarity and joy during these troubled times.

함께 놀며 문제를 해결하는 대안적 행동을 통해 일상 속 야생 찾기

우리는 땅에 발을 딛고, 눈은 하늘을 바라보며 이 기후위기에 접근합니다. 우리는 상황의 긴박함이나 심각성을 잊지 않으면서도 경이로움으로 가득 찬 마음과 기꺼이 놀고 싶은 마음으로 우리가 구현하는 세상을 바라보려고 합니다.

놀이는 우리의 실천입니다.

놀이를 통해 우리는 어려움을 포용하고 다양성을 추구하며 다각적인 문제에 대한 해결 가능성을 찾을 수 있습니다.

놀이는 실험입니다. 놀이는 언어입니다. 놀이는 무한합니다. 놀이는 연습입니다. 놀이는 주문입니다.

1. 함께 모여 놀아요! 즐거움을 위한 놀이 곤란한 문제에 즐겁게 다가가기 위해 놀이를 택했습니다. 낙담한 상황에 희망을 찾는 쉬운 방법은 즐거움입니다. 즐거움은 사고의 폭을 넓히고 생각을 바꾸기 위한 새로운 사고방식으로 문제 해결에 접근할 수 있게 도와줍니다.
2. 함께 살아요! 일상 속 야생 자연은 ‘저 밖’에만 있는 것이 아니라 도시를 포함한 모든 곳에 존재합니다. 야생은 주변 어디에나 있습니다. 인간의 일상 뿐만아니라 동물에게도 식물에게도 살만한 자연을 고민합니다.
3. 함께 맺어요! 다정한 관계 우리는 다정한 마음으로 동물, 식물 및 그 사이의 모든 존재와 관계를 맺습니다. 이 얽히고 설킨 세상에서 번영할 수 있는 공동의 방법을 찾기 위해 우리의 즐거움과 걱정을 모든 생명체와 나눕니다.
4. 함께 이야기해요! 모두를 위해 곤란함을 마주하는 다양한 입장에서 생각하고 해결합니다. 배제되기 쉬운 목소리를 중심으로 끌어들이며 다양한 가치를 반영 하면 우리 모두에게 더 나은 미래를 만들 수 있습니다.
5. 함께 일해요! 보탬 되기 마음을 나누고 싶은 모두에게 우리는 항상 열려있습니다. 서로가 도움이 되는 방식으로 더 많은 사람들과 협업 합니다.

Joyful Trouble Manifesto

Finding everyday wildness through the radical act of collective play

We approach this climate emergency with our feet on the ground – rooted where we live and our eyes to the skies. We do not forget the urgency or the seriousness of the situation, but we still choose to view the world we embody with a heart full of wonder and a willingness to play.

Play is our praxis.

Being playful allows us to embrace difficulties, make room for diversity and find possibilities to multifaceted issues.

Play is an experiment. Play is a language. Play is limitless. Play is practice. Play is a magic circle.

Joyful Trouble principles

1. Let’s Gather! We have chosen play as an enjoyable way to engage challenging problems. Enjoyment is an easy way to find hope in a discouraging situation. It can help us expand the scope of our thinking, change our minds, and establish new approaches to problem solving.
   
2. Let’s Thrive! The wild in daily life isn’t some distant thing to visit “way out there.” Wildness is all around us. We think beyond daily human life to ask, what do our non-human kin need from nature?

3. Let’s Connect! With warmth and compassion, we establish relationships with animals, plants, and everything in between. By sharing our joys and our worries with all living beings, we seek communal ways to thrive in this tangled world we share.
   
4. Let’s Talk! We think about the many different perspectives of those encountering and resolving challenges. Centering marginalized voices and reflecting diverse values creates a better future for us all.
5. Let’s Collaborate! We are always open to anyone who wants to share what’s on their mind. We work across many mutually helpful collaborations.
